Course Content
This unit explores how grapes are grown and how winemaking decisions shape the final style, quality, and value of wine.
Key areas of study include:
- Vine structure and growth
An overview of the vine’s anatomy and grape development, providing essential context for understanding vineyard and winemaking decisions. - Viticultural choices and vineyard management
An examination of different grape-growing approaches, including how viticultural practices influence yields, grape quality, and wine style. - Environmental influences in the vineyard
A study of natural factors such as climate, soil, and site conditions, and how they affect the vine’s capacity to produce grapes for wines at varying quality levels, styles, and price points. - Winemaking and post-fermentation techniques
An analysis of key winemaking decisions after harvest, including fermentation and post-fermentation options, and how these choices impact wine style, quality, price, and market positioning.
Prerequisites
- Candidates must have successfully passed the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines examination.
- Candidates are required to provide their WSET candidate number at registration. This number appears on the Letter of Achievement issued with the Level 3 qualification (not on the certificate).
- Students who completed Level 3 with another Approved Programme Provider (APP) must contact that provider to obtain their candidate number.
Terms & Conditions
- Exams may not be canceled or rescheduled after the registration deadline listed for each course. A new exam can be selected for a fee of $350, provided the candidate registers for the new exam date at least four (4) weeks in advance.
- Students transferring to DWEC from another APP may select the exam-only option only if all required coursework has been fully completed with their original APP. Otherwise, students must enroll in and complete the full course at DWEC to be eligible to sit for the exam.
- Refunds of the original payment, minus a 3% finance fee and a $50 administrative fee, are available if requested in writing (admin@dallaswinecenter.com) prior to the course registration deadline. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made after the registration deadline.
